Radek's main scientific topic is currently the heterogeneity of biological membrane systems, studied on the thylakoid (photosynthetic) membranes of cyanobacteria. He is interested in the composition, organization and dynamics of so-called microdomains, especially in relation to the light-harvesting role of photosystems and external cyanobacterial antennae, phycobilisomes. For this, he uses advanced biophysical and imaging methods (see Radek Kaňa´s group) and molecular-biological and biochemical expertise within the Laboratory of Photosynthesis.
