Radek’s primary scientific interest focus on photoprotection mechanisms in cyanobacteria and algae, as well as the heterogeneity of biological membrane systems, studied primarily in the thylakoid (photosynthetic) membranes of cyanobacteria. He investigates the composition, organization, and dynamics of so-called microdomains, particularly in relation to the light-harvesting function of photosystems and the peripheral cyanobacterial antennae, phycobilisomes. Currently, as part of the PHOTOMASCHINES program, he is studying the kinetics of phycobilisome degradation under nitrogen-deprived conditions. His work utilizes advanced biophysical and imaging techniques (see Radek Kaňa´s group), as well as molecular and biochemical expertise developed in the Laboratory of Photosynthesis.
